Elizabeth Harms, a neurodevelopalist from Canada, delivered a five-hour neurodevelopmental development seminar, Release the Potential. Introducing Elizabeth, Sylvia Funk, who has since become a self-certified development expert, tells of her own journey with her son. Then, a young man walked to the front of the room and gave a very good read on the funny poem. Elizabeth then begins her talk by describing the early years of her son's life. He was told of all the things his son would not be able to do and, in fact, the young man who had read, clearly had more functions than he had anticipated.
Professionals often tell parents that their child has "autism" or "cerebral palsy" or "learning disabilities." People tell parents what the child can't do and they need to adjust their expectations. Elizabeth and other development experts said, "NO!" The function is a direct reflection of stimulus and opportunity. When given appropriate and specific stimuli, the brain reacts to its development and function. Disadvantages explain how we receive information (sensory input - five senses, proprioception, vestibular) and the kinds of things we need to do when a piece is missing. What is the missing piece or what the problem is, it determines what kind of stimulus must be provided. This is what the neurodevelopmentalist reviews to design an individual plan for each customer.
Some areas of the visual system that need to be evaluated and difficulties addressed include: sharpness, concentration, centralized vision. Areas of the hearing system that should be considered include: chronic ear / fluid infection, hyper or hypo sensitive, irritable hearing, audiogram and tympanogram. Although these are the two main input channels, others, persistence, taste, odor, vestibular system and proprioception can greatly impact learning ability.
Auditory processing and visual processing comprise an important part of learning. Elizabeth explains how to test and practice these important skills and how they influence learning. He explains the conceptual and visualization skills and how they fit into the overall picture of learning. In the end, he dealt with the importance of dominating the empire. In the dominant hemisphere there are cognitive skills, thoughts and logic and the subdominant hemisphere lies in creativity, music and emotion. Optimal neurological organization and function depends on the dominant hemisphere.
The main concepts in the neurodevelopmental approach are intensity (continuous focus), frequency (how often) and duration (how long). Releasing True Potentials is done by stimulating the brain in certain ways. Watching this DVD gives a very good introduction to your neurodevelopmental and valuable time.
