Western culture naturally sees pills to cure whatever hurts them. This partly explains Viagra's great success in treating men's erectile dysfunction. Women, of course, do not have erectile dysfunction, but often suffer from hypoactive sexual desire disorders (FHSDD), a lack of sexual desire. Viagra does not treat FHSDD much, but the search for a cure for FHSDD in the form of pills has continued.
The new major challenger is flibanserin, developed by German firm Boehringer Ingelheim. It is part of a large class of drugs that treat depression, such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Welbutrin. In fact, flibanserin was initially created to treat depression, but was found to be ineffective in that capacity. Drugs that treat depression do so by raising the level of chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. Dopamine, serotonin, and non-epinephrin are three commonly used neurotransmitters. Flibanserin has been found to increase the level of domamina and serotonin in the brain.
Fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft) work primarily in the brain to increase serotonin levels. One of the many side effects of these drugs is to reduce the sexual desire of women. Although the side effects of lowering sexual desire are a concern for many women about these drugs, I have found that very little will stop them for this reason. The effects of medication on depression, panic disorder, and overall well-being are benefits that go well beyond sexual desire.
This brings me to the antidepressant, bupropion (Welbutrin). Bupropion raises dopamine and non-epinephrine levels in the brain, and like flibanserin, has the effect of increasing sexual desire in women. In my practice, I have had moderate success in using Bupropion to treat FHSDD. The problem with Bupropion is that it is not well received by many patients. High dose bupropion has long been known to increase the risk of seizures, and low doses (all currently used) can cause anxiety. Less common side effects are weight loss and insomnia. Many women on bupropion tell me that they don't like the way they feel.
Flibanserin, has been shown to have modest positive effects on sexual desire, stimulation, and has shown an increase in sexual activity. The side effects looked significant, with a 15 percent decrease in the trial. The effects of flibanserin are not immediate, but may be long-lasting. Flibanserin is especially for premenopausal women, with hormone replacement therapy and testosterone being a better option for postmenopausal women.
As a Westerner, and a doctor to boot, I naturally tend to consider the best pill for all our problems. Flibanserin may help jump start your sexual desire, but when you get down to it, FHSDD is a psychological disorder and not a chemical imbalance. Adapting brain chemistry to compensate for the lack of relationships is not the best attack line for this problem.
For those of you who don't believe that FHSDD is primarily a psychological problem; consider the widespread finding that a woman with FHSDD who has found a new relationship almost always has a high sexual appetite. It comes from the fulfillment of true sexual passion.
The best way to recover sexual desire is achieved by understanding their true sexual desire, and by finding a fulfilling way. This is all he needs to get rid of the necessary neurotransmitters. Forget the pill and start focusing on your relationship.
