Cross Training for Basketball

It is clear that the sport continues to develop at a rapid pace; Access to better equipment, more training, strength and conditioning, gym time, summer leagues, spring leagues, elite leagues, camps, etc. Increased access to resources, in my opinion, has led to more problems than benefits. Youth now specialize in sports and their position. This has caused a lot of players to burn and we are seeing an increase in the number of basketball players with injuries.

According to the Canadian Basketball Long Term Development Model (LTAD), every motorcycle development course I take through the University, and the amount of worrying research: WE MAKE OUR SPECIAL DONE! Our youth basketball needs to develop and perfect all motorcycle patterns, not just basketball ones. In my opinion, the best thing we can do for our youth is to get them involved in various activities and sports (Cross Training). This variety allows them to work on different motor patterns (so we work on the overall movement) but also allows our youth to become proficient in different settings.

The benefits of cross training include movement for life, reducing injury opportunities, improving performance, and reducing athlete's decline / burnout. We need to keep our basketball athletes healthy, engaged, and performing well on the court. That's why I think Steve Nash Commercial Training Day is so relevant to basketball and the importance of Cross Training. Steve Nash is one of the most talented athletes in the NBA who loves what he does, is good at sports, and loves to do it. I believe Steve Nash's involvement in cross training, as a child and teenager, played a key role in his success and longevity as a basketball athlete.

It is our goal as professionals, coaches, volunteers, parents, and supporters to give our basketball athletes a healthy atmosphere to enjoy! If your kids like basketball, they will move towards basketball as they get older. Early specialization for our youth will reduce their performance, prolong their career, and put them at risk. Let's encourage our youth to try soccer, lacrosse, baseball, track, etc.

At Prehab we understand the importance of developing movement patterns first. We understand the importance of improving movement. What we do today, may not be specific to basketball, but is part of the long-term development of basketball athletes. Cross training is probably the only performance improvement tool you are looking for!
