Currently, the US population is about 300 million, 75% of them, or about 225 million people wear corrective lenses whether they are glasses or contact lenses. That's a very high number, especially compared to the 1980 statistics where only 50% of people wore glasses. That's a 50% increase in just 30 years. Why does our eyesight get worse and worse? Many born with spheres are not perfect for the eyeball and this is certainly a common cause for vision issues. The only known method to correct this problem is Lasik eye surgery; other than glasses and contact lenses, of course. However, there are other things we do that will lead to this imperfect vision. We will look at 5 main reasons for this real concern and how to make it worse.
Focus is the number one factor in vision loss in America and most likely worldwide. What does it mean? When you look at something your eyes flicker about 3 times slower than usual. So when you watch TV, movies in theaters, your computer screen, read books or look at many other things, your eyes are dry and this creates damage to your eyes over time. There are things you can do to reduce the problem, besides avoiding this activity together. When watching TV, take a break during the ad. That doesn't mean staring at your computer screen during a commercial break. Maybe playing by hand or two by playing cards, it would be best if you could find games that require physical activity such as playing ping pong, foosball, and so on. Nintendo WII won't help here; maybe get some fresh air outside; you can call someone, etc. Watching a movie in a theater is different. There are a few things you can do. You can buy "spring" eyedrops instead of "get rid of the red ones". Use it throughout your movie. Take a look around the theater occasionally. Maybe forcing yourself to break into the annoying bathroom during a slow movie section. You may need to be creative here but find something to do that doesn't require you to stare at an object. Maybe go to a theater. You can apply these principles to your computer time, reading time, and so on. Random facts, there is no evidence that darker readings do more harm than reading in bright rooms.
Sunlight, or ultra violet radiation, is the number two cause of eye problems in our country. Ultra-purple rays coming from the sun and tanning machines cause great damage to our eyes. Sunglasses with UV protection are an absolute must for everyone, in my opinion. The sun's UV rays reflect many surfaces. They also penetrate many surfaces. Just because you turn from the sun or drive in your car does not mean that you are protected from damaging rays. In fact, it is usually the most common condition where sun damage occurs. I will also mention that it is important that you wear eye protection when tanning. Covering your eyes does not stop UV damage and in fact it is usually worse because most of the time when we are tan with the eyes closed, we put in direct sunlight or tanning machines, causing serious damage, more than if we were exposed to the sun.
As if there wasn't enough reason to quit smoking. Smoking is the third leading cause of vision loss in America. Cigarette smoking causes macular degeneration which is a problem in which the part of our eyes that sends the received signals to the brain is reduced and less and less signals are sent to the brain so that our vision becomes poor. There is little else to say here except to quit smoking, we all know how awful it is for us. This also includes tobacco and chewing tobacco.
An eye injury is the fourth leading cause of vision loss in America. It can be injured in the working environment with certain chemicals in the air or pieces of debris flying into your eyes. It can be injured by sports in contact with improper protection. Handling without a helmet can be very serious and can be permanent damage to the eyes. Damage to fireworks and flames, especially sparks that emanate from fireworks and fires can be the most dangerous type as they happen so fast that your blindfold may not have time to respond. Then by the time you get to the hospital, the damage is permanent and cannot be repaired. The only thing that can prevent this from happening is keeping your distance from a dangerous source. You also need to be careful in making sure that fireworks like this are far from children, which can be a difficult task as children are usually very excited about fireworks and play with them.
Infections cause conjunctivitis, also known as pink eyes, and they can do damage to the eyes and in severe cases despite causing serious damage. Pink eyes are a condition where bacterial or viral transmission occurs to your eyes, most likely by using towels or bedding that belongs to someone else. This is one of the reasons why we are told not to share towels, razors, and other personal items. If you are infected, you should go to a doctor for a prescription. They have over-the-counter treatment, but it doesn't work.
Now that you know what you are doing in your daily life that causes your vision to deteriorate over time, you will be able to protect yourself. Keeping these five steps will definitely help us, as adults, look better but it will be most beneficial when applied to our children before their eyes are damaged.
